Designed for rapid evacuation, free-fall boats are launched in a single controlled motion when time, fire, or structural damage has made conventional lifeboats unsafe.

Free-fall boats are mostly seen on board tankers, bulk carriers, and container ships because the size of vessels, risks of cargoes, and operating environments impose conditions for maximum reliability.
